What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)?

Society has developed certain criteria for how various parts of the female body reflect the female figure. For example, it is widely agreed that eyebrows whose outer ends curve upwards look more attractive (even though there are many counter-examples), as do a slight upturn of the nose, long and slender fingers, and a slightly long neck. There are even folk tests for the breasts: can a pencil stay in place underneath without falling, could you climb a flat wall in an emergency, and so on :) Yet, for some reason, our culture never formed an aesthetic ideal for the buttocks and has not given the subject much thought.

When we ask women, all they want is an oval curve to appear behind them – that is all. In reality, there are a number of details that shape our perception of a beautiful bottom: the fork where the two gluteal (buttock) mounds meet, the dimples of Venus on either side of it, the angle where the buttocks join the legs, the way the two buttocks touch each other, and whether the sides of the buttocks are hollow or rounded.

When creating the buttocks we idealise, there are many procedures that can be chosen according to each patient's needs: removing excess fat, injecting fat into flat or hollow areas, placing silicone implants, sometimes removing skin, and sometimes folding excess tissue at the waist inwards. After a thorough examination, we choose one of these methods together with our patients. Amid the flood of information online you may also come across commercial fantasies such as large-volume synthetic filler injections or thread lifts, but I do not really recommend them. The reasons can be discussed in another article if desired.

What is it that makes Brazilian women the queens of the derrière? Is their genetic heritage really that flawless? Or, as a friend who lived there for many years told me, is it the plastic surgery routinely added to girls' dowries :)

Of course, no one can ignore the advantage good genes can bring. However, people without that genetic advantage do not need to step aside and give up – especially when we remember that life is a gift we only get to use once.

So What Makes the Brazilian Butt So Attractive?

When we talk about a Brazilian butt, the following key criteria should be considered.

The first is the oval contour of the buttocks in the hip area. If the patient has little fat, this is the hardest part to correct, because it requires rounding out the hip region – and no implant has yet been invented for this area. We can fill and round it out with fat taken from other parts of the body.

The second is how far the buttocks project outwards, which we call projection. Here we have two options: either we inject fat harvested from other areas, or we use silicone buttock implants designed for this purpose. In the right patient, both are correct choices. Just keep in mind that part of the injected fat will be absorbed and lost. Oh, and when a silicone buttock implant is placed, it will never feel like a cushion under you when you sit :) It sits further back and higher up, and you will never feel it.

Another point is the inward curve of the waist. In a Brazilian Butt Lift (Brazilian butt), one of the most important details that makes the buttocks look beautiful is the curve given to the waist. There can hardly be a more attractive sight than a soft slope rising from the waist to the buttocks. We achieve this with VASER Lipoplasty. With VASER we both remove the fat in that area and tighten the skin.

In my opinion, one little-known but very important detail of an attractive Brazilian Butt Lift is that the lower poles of the areas where the two buttocks meet should be oval. In other words, not only the outer contour of the buttocks but also the contours facing each other should meet in an oval shape. If this detail is missed, you can never speak of a perfect bottom. There is a hidden bracket here: one leg of the bracket runs between the L5 vertebra and the trochanter, the other between the coccyx and the point where the sciatic nerve emerges into the thigh, with their concave sides facing each other. We also create this detail with VASER Lipoplasty.

In the past, a Brazilian Butt Lift simply meant buttock implants, but today the state of the art is to combine buttock implants, fat injection and VASER Lipoplasty.

What Is the Typical Buttock Shape of Turkish Women?

The biggest problem I observe in women in our country is flat or hollow areas on the sides of the hips, which we could describe as masculine. Flat buttocks come second. For these two reasons, unfortunately, many women in our country have rather masculine-looking buttocks.

The reason is, of course, popular culture, the spread of the internet and social media on smartphones. However different their cultures may be, the internet will unite people around a single shared perception. Following this mechanism, the first aesthetic procedure to take centre stage was rhinoplasty – the nose is right in the middle of the face and cannot be hidden. It makes perfect sense that the buttocks, which are easy to hide and not constantly on display, stayed in the background for so long.

Which Methods Can Be Used for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

If we are placing silicone implants in the buttocks, an implant can be placed on each side through an incision in the fold between the buttocks. Fat injection means harvesting fat from other parts of the body, preparing it as a fat graft and injecting it into hollow or flat areas. Although some surgeons fill the buttocks with large volumes of fat, in my own practice I do not prefer fat injection to fill the buttocks completely – silicone implants are more suitable. To me, using fat only to fill localised deficits makes more sense.

Is the Fat for Fat Injection Taken from the Patient? And What If There Is Not Enough Fat to Harvest?

The fat used for fat injection is, of course, taken from the patient's own body. Otherwise tissue compatibility problems would arise, as in organ transplantation. If the patient does not have enough fat, fat injection is simply not an option for that person.

How Are Buttock Implants Used? Do They Come in Different Sizes Like Breast Implants?

Like breast implants, buttock implants come in different sizes and types. They are placed within the gluteal muscles. So are these implants visible? If the implant is placed above the muscle, i.e. directly under the skin, it is almost inevitable that it will be visible from the outside. Most poor results come from choosing this technique. To avoid this problem, the implant needs to be placed inside the muscle (gluteus maximus).

What Should the Patient Pay Attention to After Buttock Surgery?

Is there pain, is there a scar? After buttock implants, patients need to be careful about how they sit and lie down. Usually, within a week or two, patients start to feel very well and have no pain, so they begin to neglect being careful. Because the gluteal muscles are very strong, and given the pressure from the implant, the freshly healed incision line can come under strain and open up, even though it is closed in four layers. Since our incision lies within the fold between the buttocks, it cannot be seen.

Are There Any Risks to Buttock Surgery?

Of course, this is an operation, and the complications that can occur in any operation can also occur here. After all, a foreign material is being placed in the body – could the body reject it? In theory, our body can react against any material, but silicone is an extremely inert substance and it is extremely rare for the body to reject it. At worst, there may be a chance of capsule formation around the implant. In my own practice I have never encountered a rejection reaction to silicone implants.
