Mommy Makeover in Turkey: Your Personalised Combined Aesthetic Surgery Guide

A Safe, Functional and Personalised Combined Transformation That Restores Anatomical Integrity

"Motherhood or major weight changes are among the most miraculous and profound transformations in a woman's life; yet the anatomical traces they leave can sometimes break her connection with her own reflection. A mommy makeover is not a standard 'package operation'. It is a personalised reconstructive journey that brings together the body's core balance, the abdominal fascia and breast proportions with the same surgical elegance and high medical discipline."

— Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ozan Balık, Specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery

Pregnancy and childbirth are among life's great and beautiful changes. During this time the body can change as well: the abdominal skin may loosen, the abdominal muscles may separate, and the volume or shape of the breasts may change. In some people, weight changes also lead to contour differences in the arms, waist or back. These changes leave a different mark on every body, so not everyone needs the same solution.

A mommy makeover is not the name of a single operation but of a personalised plan in which different aesthetic surgical procedures can be combined according to the person's needs. A tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation or reduction, arm lift and liposuction may be among the possible parts of this plan. Which procedures are performed together is decided by the patient's health, expectations, body structure and the surgical safety assessment.

For some patients, treating the abdomen and breasts together is enough, while others may consider adding the arms or waist contour to the plan. A combination that suits one patient may not be right for another. That is why the centre of a mommy makeover consultation is not a ready-made package but a personalised surgical plan.

For patients travelling to Istanbul from abroad, the whole process can be discussed in advance, from a free online pre-consultation to the in-person examination and post-operative check-ups. The length of stay in Turkey and the recovery plan also depend on the chosen procedures. For general planning, a stay of about 10 days may be enough for most patients; with extensive combinations, however, this period may be longer, and fitness to fly home is assessed separately.

What exactly does mommy makeover mean?

Mommy makeover is a term that became popular for addressing the changes the body goes through after pregnancy and childbirth. However, this plan is not only for people who have become mothers. Patients who want a surgical assessment of more than one area because of weight change, ageing or their own body goals can also benefit from similar combined plans.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) states that, within a mommy makeover, a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction and other procedures can be combined in a personalised way according to the patient's needs.

This does not mean that all of these operations have to be done in the same session. Some procedures can be combined; in some cases it may be better to divide the operations into stages. The decision is made taking into account the patient's general condition and the total scope of the planned surgery.

Which procedures can be added to the plan?

A mommy makeover plan can include one or several areas. The options discussed most often are:

Tummy tuck

After pregnancy or weight change, the abdominal skin may have loosened or the abdominal muscles may have separated. In a tummy tuck the excess skin is addressed; in suitable patients the abdominal wall is assessed as well. In our clinic, in almost all tummy tuck operations, depending on the suitability assessment, the fascia of the rectus abdominis muscles is plicated and diastasis repair is also performed.

Breast lift

A breast lift can be considered when the breast skin has loosened or the nipple sits lower. The aim is to move the breast tissue and the nipple to a more suitable position. A lift can be done on its own or, in some patients, planned together with breast augmentation or reduction.

Breast augmentation or reduction

If there is volume loss or a marked volume difference between the breasts, augmentation with implants may be considered. If large, heavy breasts cause discomfort, a reduction may be considered. Which procedure is suitable is decided by the patient's wishes and the examination findings.

Liposuction

Liposuction can be used to shape the body contour by removing fatty tissue from certain areas. The abdomen, waist, back or other areas may be assessed. Liposuction is not a weight-loss method; which areas are treated and how much fat can be removed are planned for each patient.

Arm lift

If there is marked excess or loose skin on the upper arm, an arm lift may be considered. This procedure leaves a scar; the position and length of the scar depend on the amount of excess skin and the surgical plan.

The procedures that can be added to the combination are not limited to these. Each additional procedure can affect the total operating time, the recovery needs and the follow-up plan. For this reason, performing every possible procedure in the same session is not always the right choice.

Why is there no single mommy makeover plan?

Two patients complaining about similar areas does not mean they need the same surgical plan. In one patient, the abdominal skin and muscle separation may be the main issue, while in another, sagging or volume loss of the breasts may be more prominent. One patient may want contouring with liposuction; for another, assessing the skin of the arms may be important.

During planning, answers to the following questions are sought:

  • Which areas bother the patient most?
  • Which changes can be addressed surgically?
  • Which procedures can be safely planned in the same session?
  • Is the patient's general health suitable for this combination?
  • What will the total duration and scope of the operation be?
  • Do the patient's work, family and care arrangements allow for recovery?
  • How should the patient's travel time and return plan be arranged?

The aim is not to perform as many procedures as possible at once. The aim is to create a realistic, medically appropriate plan that takes the patient's needs into account. Performing several procedures in the same session can increase anaesthesia and recovery time; therefore, in combined surgery, health status and the total surgical scope are assessed separately.

Who can be considered for a mommy makeover?

Suitability for a mommy makeover depends on which procedures the patient is considering. General health, weight stability, medications, smoking or nicotine use, previous operations and the conditions that will support the recovery period are assessed together.

It is important to share your medical history openly at the first consultation. A history of blood clots, circulatory or heart-lung problems, diabetes, regular medication or any experience with anaesthesia may affect the plan. If breast surgery is being considered, a breast examination and your personal and family history are also included in the assessment.

Future pregnancy plans and the timing of abdominal and breast surgery are a topic that needs to be discussed. A new pregnancy can affect the abdominal skin and muscles again, and the volume and shape of the breasts may also change. Similarly, significant weight changes can affect the result of the surgery. It can therefore be helpful to plan the operation during as stable a period as possible.

The first step: a free online consultation

For patients considering travelling to Istanbul from abroad for surgery, the process can start with a free online pre-consultation. In this conversation we discuss which areas bother you, what kind of change you would like and your medical history.

Photos or videos from certain angles may be requested for the initial assessment. They help us understand the body contour in general terms but do not replace a real examination. Skin quality, muscle structure, breast tissue and the characteristics of surgical scars must be assessed in person.

During the consultation it is not assumed that all procedures can be done together. First your needs are discussed, and then, at the in-person examination, it is assessed how each area can be treated. Sometimes the number of procedures initially considered may be reduced, or the surgical plan may be divided into two stages. These decisions are made with the patient's health and the scope of the surgery in mind.

Examination and pre-operative preparation in Istanbul

When you arrive in Istanbul, we finalise the initial plan made during the online consultation with an in-person examination. The abdomen and breasts, the arms and the areas being considered for liposuction are assessed separately. We discuss which procedures can be done together and which would be better left for another time.

The necessary blood tests and anaesthesia assessment are then carried out. The test results and your medical history are considered together with the scope of the operation. If it turns out that the operation is not suitable or the plan needs to change, this is shared openly with the patient.

At the pre-operative consultation, incision sites, scars, implants that may be used, muscle repair, the need for a compression garment or special bra, the possibility of drains and the recovery instructions are discussed. Reviewing the patient's expectations once more and answering their questions is an important part of this preparation.

Day of surgery and the hospital stay

Since a mommy makeover is not a single standard operation, the duration of surgery is not fixed either. A plan with only a tummy tuck and breast lift will not take the same time as one that adds liposuction and an arm lift. The exact duration can be estimated once the examination has been done and the surgical plan has been made.

The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The length of the hospital stay depends on the scope of the procedures and your post-operative condition. The decision to discharge you is made after the team's clinical assessment.

When several areas are treated, there may be different care instructions for different parts of the body. For example, a compression garment after a tummy tuck, a special bra after breast surgery and recommendations on arm movements after an arm lift may all apply at the same time. The instructions are therefore explained separately for each procedure performed.

Why does recovery time vary from person to person?

It is difficult to give a single recovery timeline after a mommy makeover, because recovery depends on the combination of procedures performed. The activity plan of a patient who has only had a breast lift is not the same as the needs of a patient who has had a tummy tuck, muscle repair, liposuction and an arm lift.

Factors that can affect recovery include:

  • The number and scope of operations performed in the same session
  • Whether diastasis repair of the abdominal muscles was performed
  • The number of areas treated with liposuction and the amount removed
  • The type of breast surgery and the use of implants
  • The patient's general health and wound-healing characteristics
  • The physical demands of work or care responsibilities
  • The patient's ability to follow the post-operative instructions

In the early period, pain, tightness, swelling, bruising and tiredness may occur. Some movements may temporarily become more difficult. If a compression garment, special bra or arm-support garment has been recommended, how and for how long to wear it is explained individually. The use of drains also depends on the procedures performed and the surgical decision.

It would not be right to give a single date for returning to work, driving, lifting children, heavy housework and exercise. A gradual return is planned taking into account the nature of the patient's work and the scope of the operation. Patients with young children in particular may find recovery easier if they arrange help with daily care and lifting in the early period.

Length of stay in Turkey: usually 10 days

For a mommy makeover, the length of stay depends on the procedures performed and post-operative recovery. For general travel planning, a stay of about 10 days in Turkey may be enough for most patients. This time frame helps to plan the post-operative check-ups and the assessment before your return.

However, which procedures are combined in a mommy makeover matters a great deal. If a tummy tuck, breast surgery, arm lift and large liposuction areas are done in the same session, the operating time and recovery needs may increase. In that case a stay of more than 10 days may be needed. The patient's speed of recovery, need for drains, travel time and general health also affect the timing of the return.

10 days can be regarded as a general planning period; it does not mean clearance to fly for every combination and every patient. Before the operation it is a good idea to have a changeable flight ticket and to allow for the possibility of a longer stay if needed. Fitness to fly home is determined at the post-operative examination.

Post-operative follow-up and returning home

During your stay in Istanbul, the planned check-ups are carried out. Your surgical team assesses the dressings, any drains and the recovery process. Discharge and the hotel stay are arranged according to your clinical condition. When appropriate, a VIP transfer to your hotel can be provided.

Before you go home, it is important that you are assessed by the surgeon who performed the operation. How each area should be protected, how long the garments should be worn, your medications and whom to contact in an emergency should be explained.

After you return home, online contact can continue. In our clinic we aim to follow the recovery process for at least one year. Photos and video calls can help assess progress remotely; however, if you have unexpected or urgent symptoms, you need to get in-person medical care where you are.

Possible risks and safety assessment

Combined surgery allows more areas to be treated than a single operation; at the same time it can increase the total operating time and care needs. For this reason, which procedures are done in the same session is decided with patient safety and clinical suitability in mind.

As with any surgical procedure, there may be risks such as bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, fluid collection, scarring, changes in sensation, asymmetry or the need for an additional procedure. In long operations involving several areas of the body, the risk of blood clots is also assessed. These possibilities do not mean they will occur in every patient; personal risk factors and the scope of the operation are assessed together. The effect of combined operations on duration and recovery should also be considered as part of the surgical plan.

Patients for whom breast implants are planned are informed about the long-term follow-up of implants and the possibility of further surgery in the future. In breast surgery, the type of implant and its product information are shared with the patient. If a tummy tuck and diastasis repair are planned, the tightness in the abdomen and movement restrictions are also explained.

After surgery, contact the medical team without delay if you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, marked swelling in one leg, uncontrollable bleeding, rapidly increasing pain or fever. In an emergency, go to your local emergency medical service.

Is our surgery covered by health insurance?

Within the health protection programme for international patients, our clinic will arrange your health insurance and complication insurance before you even arrive in Turkey. This way, from before you board your plane until six months after you return to your country, you will be under the protective umbrella of our national health system.

Why is the price of a mommy makeover individual?

Because a mommy makeover is not a single fixed procedure, its price is not standard either. Which procedures are included in the plan, such as a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, implants, liposuction or an arm lift, affects the total cost. The hospital, anaesthesia, hospital stay and additional services offered to the patient also determine the scope of the quote.

When getting a quote, it is useful to clarify which procedures are included and under which conditions the plan might change. You should also ask about hospital and anaesthesia conditions, post-operative check-ups, and the scope of accommodation and transfer services. Comparing different plans only by the total figure can mean missing important details.

Our clinic works to offer a surgical plan suited to the individual and high-quality care at accessible prices. Patient safety and surgical suitability come before cost considerations.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mommy makeover a single operation?

No. It is the name of a personalised plan in which several aesthetic surgical procedures are combined according to the person's needs. The same procedures are not performed in every patient.

Which operations can be combined?

A tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation or reduction, liposuction and an arm lift may be among the options. Which procedures are done together is decided by the examination, health status and total surgical scope.

Can all procedures be done in the same session?

Not always. Some combinations may be suitable; in some patients it may be better to divide the procedures into stages. The decision is made taking into account the patient's health and the total duration of the operation.

How long is the recovery?

It is not possible to give a single period. Recovery depends on the number and scope of the procedures performed and the patient's personal characteristics. The time to return to activities should be decided with your surgeon.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

In general, a stay of about 10 days may be enough for most patients. However, depending on the combination performed, the flight time and your post-operative condition, a longer stay may be needed. Your return flight depends on your surgeon's post-operative assessment.

Is a mommy makeover only for people who have given birth?

No. Although the term comes from post-pregnancy body changes, combined plans can also be considered for other patients who want changes in similar areas and are found surgically suitable.

Does follow-up continue after I return home?

Yes. Follow-up can continue through online consultations. If you have new or urgent symptoms, you need to get medical care where you are.

A personalised mommy makeover plan in Istanbul

When considering a mommy makeover, the first step is to talk about which areas bother you and what kind of change you would like. A free online consultation can help answer your first questions. Then, with an in-person examination, tests and an anaesthesia assessment, it becomes clear which procedures are right for you.

A tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, arm lift and liposuction can be considered within the same plan; however, not every operation has to be done together. The combination is created individually for you, taking surgical safety and recovery needs into account.

Planning about 10 days in Turkey is generally a useful starting point for most patients. With extensive surgery, or depending on how recovery goes, you may need to stay longer. The timing of your return flight is determined at the post-operative examination. After you return home, our online contact and follow-up continue.

This article is for general information only and is not an individual diagnosis or treatment recommendation. The procedures to be performed, whether operations can be combined, recovery and the length of stay in Turkey are determined by examination and the physician's assessment.

"The marks your body carries are memories of the most precious periods of your life. Not to erase those marks, but to safely restore the elegance, form and core strength your body deserves, we would be honoured to welcome you to our clinic in Istanbul."
